An online free blackjack session starts by clicking on the chip that you want to bet. Once you have placed your wager, you can hit the deal button to receive the first two cards. The dealer will also receive two cards; one of which will be exposed to the players. This exposed card is referred to as the “up card” while the unexposed card is called the “hole card”. The object of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21 or “busting”. In some cases, this means even holding onto 12 or 13 in hopes of the dealer busting. Therefore, playing basic strategy is of utmost importance while playing blackjack. After receiving two cards, a player can either “hit” or “stand”. If the player hits, they will receive another card in hopes of improving their hand. If the player stands, they will not receive any further cards thus hoping their hand is higher than the dealer’s or that the dealer will eventually bust.
The strategy to choose “hit” or “stand” depends on the dealer's up card in blackjack. If the dealer shows a 2, 3, 4 or 5, the player can choose to stand even if they haven’t reached 17 since the odds are good that the dealer will bust. On the contrary, if the dealer's up card is 7 or above, then it is possible that his hole card is a 10 or more. In this situation, the player must hit until they have reached at least 17 or higher or chances are the dealer will win the hand.

Sometimes, in blackjack, the player can also split two initial cards of same value and play them as two separate hands. The player can bet an amount equal to the first bet on the new hand. However, it recommended that a player usually only splits when they have eights through aces. Splitting decisions also generally depend on the dealer’s “up card”. By following the basic strategies of blackjack, a player can reduce the casinos edge from 5% to 0.5%. Blackjack can be a very profitable game if a player is disciplined enough to follow both hitting and betting strategies.
